Recently, we've started contributing to Liminal.Earth, an amazing new site that uses modern mapping and social platforms to document High Strangeness.
If you've been following us for a while, you know Omi's hobbies include Geo-location, Google Local Guides and being a total location nerd. Nerd.... Anyway's, the thought of contributing to a growing map of Weirdness was right up her alley! Go visit Liminal.Earth and submit your Paranormal, Weird, Cryptid, UFO or other strange experiences to help discover what's weird in our world.
As we started submitting accounts, we realized we should also provide detailed accounts of our own experiences to our listeners and fans.
One of our earlier paranormal experiences came our way care of Daniel of M & D Paranormal and Cryptid Research. We had just moved to the WNC and were elated that a paranormal team was eager to make friends and give us the royal tour of the area.
Helen’s Bridge is supposed to be a hotspot of paranormal activity and allegedly one of the most haunted places in Asheville, NC. We were taken here back in Late Jan/February, 2019.
According to the legends/mythology, if you drive under the bridge slowly, or walk under, the ghost of a distraught mother who killed her child (or her child died in a fire) is supposed to appear. She’s supposed to play tricks on people’s cars or with people passing through under the bridge. Anecdotal accounts range from the ghost being summoned by calling her name, or mechanical problems with your vehicle when trying to leave the location.
While we were here, we didn’t see a ghost, at all. In fact, if you decide to walk under the bridge instead of driving, you can clearly see bunches of overgrown vines that clutch together on weakened/dead branches. When viewed at an angle (check our Instagram), they have a very human-scarecrow effect.
While at the location, there were a few other curious folks driving through. Judging by the age and condition of these vehicles, it would be completely natural for mechanical problems like stalling or transmission issues to occur on the sharp curves and the steep angled sections of road that supply parking and pull-off sections for visitors.
However, our camera batteries drained. All of them, all at once. Being of a strong tech and logic-first mindset, we figured it was the cold, and this is why we carry spare batteries in our camera bags with a towel and a “Hot hands”. We retrieved two batteries and tried to resume filming. These batteries died in under five minutes. Brand. New. Batteries. We'll explore this later in more posts, but this was the start of our "High Strangeness" and equipment issues when exploring the weird out here.
According to the friend that took us here, He’s noticed that while he’s never seen a ghost here, he does note that if more than one or two people show up, talking about the history and the weird activity makes weird things happen.
Another weird thing we noticed was that the light in the area kept “Fading in and out” -well, that’s the best way we can describe it. One moment it’s bright, almost daylight and you can see the streetlights below. The next moment, everything is dim, with a pale green tone and fog creeping in. This happened the entire hour we were there, this bright and then dull pulsing of the ambient light in the area. While the temperature was cold, it was steady.
While we're not sure what's going on at Helen's Bridge, we do know the legend attracts visitors at all hours of the day and night. So we recommend being safe and pulling over as far as you can before walking around the area. Also note, there is private property, so make sure you don't trespass.
